Associated Press
Justin Guarini: He has a 'brand'-new project.
READER FEEDBACK
Jenice Armstrong: Branding - that's the ticketFORMER "American Idol" star Justin Guarini told the Daily News last week that he's working on his brand. What I want to know is, whatever happened to musicians just making music? Or writers just writing their columns? Or manicurists just doing nails? These days, it's not good enough to just do whatever it is that you do. You also have to build up your personal brand. That's right. You need to treat your skills as a commodity and market them as if they were a tube of toothpaste or a can of soup. "We're in desperately competitive times," noted Marian Salzman, a nationally recognized trend spotter who helped popularize the term metrosexual. "Everything is about who am I? What do I have to sell? And who's going to buy me at the best possible price? "A lot of people are going to become free agents," added Salzman, chief marketing officer for Porter Novelli. "We all need to be thinking of ourselves as the best product you need to be." Peter Madden, founder and president of the Philly-based Agile Cat advertising firm, said branding is about differentiating yourself from the competition. "Maybe you're an accountant, but how are you an accountant?" Madden asked. "What makes you that special kind of accountant? That can be tough for people to do. We're taught to be humble." So, it's official for me now. No longer am I merely Jenice Armstrong, columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News. I am now Brand Jenice Armstrong, packaged and on the shelf. Yes, I drank the Kool-Aid. But these are scary times. You've read about what the newspaper industry is going through. My parents held their teaching jobs for decades with never even a threat of layoffs or salary givebacks. I, like a whole lot of other folks, may not get that luxury. And if you believe the gazillion branding experts out there, you're nothing without your own brand. You don't even exist. And you never existed. OK, so maybe I'm poking a fun at the concept, but there's no arguing that practically everyone needs to have at least some online presence when a prospective employer or client Googles them. Recently, I arranged for Karen Taylor Bass, author of "You Want Caviar But Have Money for Chitterlings: A Smart Do-It Yourself PR Guide for Those on a Budget," to work her branding magic on a Philadelphia manicurist who'd contacted me looking to expand her business. Shawna Coffee envisions herself as one day owning a nail salon, having a T-shirt line and doing nails for celebrities and other high-end clientele. But for the moment, she's filing calloused heels in neighborhood salons as an independent contractor. "What we want to do is position and brand you as a premier experience as it relates to nail care and nail quality, and that you're available for all sorts of opportunities, eventually to having your own line of nail color," Taylor told Coffee during a sit-down at the Daily News. "Do you have a Web site? We need a Web site." Taylor continued, "Are you blogging? We are going to create a blog. The blog is where you are going to talk about yourself, your love of nails. You are going to update it twice a week. Do you have a bio? You'll need a bio." Taylor also directed Coffee to get on Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and Twitter, a new micro-blogging network. Taylor started talking with Coffee about doing Internet podcasts and radio interviews, and hosting charity functions to raise her visibility and increase her circle of contacts. Coffee, who'd shown up with some papers and her Bible, looked overwhelmed. "The Lord wants you to have this amazing business," Taylor reassured Coffee. With a little branding, she may get there.

hahaha, yeah, this is what I thought too.
(and I was thinking of Justin during the whole number and how he made this possible, LOL!) ***Buzz American Idols Perform Live, Suck! What you heard last night on American Idol was the top 8 performing, "Can't Get You Outta My Head" by Kylie Minogue, sadly it didn't sound like anything like the original! The 8 contestants sang LIVE for the first time and you could tell. For the past four weeks the idols sang to pre-recorded tracks that are available on iTunes to download which had nice harmonies and almost sounded like a choir. Watching the intro performance, something seemed different, odd even. They sounded off key in my opinion when they started and just was blah! The guys were all over the place, the blind guy was moving in places he shouldn't be moving, it was a mess…nevertheless the producers of the show gave us the real stuff! Idol runner up from Season One, Justin Guarini said, "Every single year, we cannot stand the group performances. I know they can't stand it either. And I think what makes [the group performances] even worse now is that they're lip-synced. They're really prerecorded now." Some fans said: Last week it was very obvious the group number was prerecorded. During almost the entire song, the camera kept showing Scott's hands supposedly playing the piano. Then towards the end of the song, Scott stood up to sing with the rest of the contestants but you could still hear the piano being played in the background in the exact same tempo and volume. I seriously doubt Scott had time to learn to play that piece that well in one week on top of all the other duties he had to learn (group number, Ford commercial, his own song). Hmm…it's not just me, but tonight was definitely LIVE, it was uncomfortably LIVE

I remember Justin joking with Kimberly on Idol Wrap last week that he didn't know that he had so much power over what the contestants did on the show. Bet
he knows now
Gawd, it is only April and he has been credited for
starting Miley Cyrus's career, completely owned TV guide network, shined in "The awakening of Angel Deluna" and now he is keeping AI on their
toes.Between all of that and everything else he has his hands in, this kid could take over the world by the end of the year...

Justin GuariniMay 17, 2009It's so dope that all these singers are getting into JUMP. As someone who was weened on old school karaoke from the days when my dad had to turn
off the sound on one of the speakers on the tape deck to get rid of the lyrics, it feels great to be supporting, in a small way, the music community. It
looks like Justin Guarini just got his hands on a pair of the Vanquish Black Silver Kid Crystal.

5/18: Justin Guarini handicaps the final twoSorry. I had to write that Idol "print" story which quotes Linny. I'll post it in the morning. Then I had to prep for an interview with Larry King (who ironically is not known to prep for HIS interviews.). And then I talked to Mark Burnett, who is shilling a new TNT show "Wedding Day," which has elements of "Extreme Makeover" and every upbeat makeover show in history. Yes, the man who created "Survivor" and "The Apprentice" has gone all soft on us. (Then again, he also recently executive produced an MTV show called "Bully Beatdown.") Phew! Now I'm finally getting to the interview I did with season one runner up and TV Guide "Idol Tonight" host Justin Guarini last Thursday to handicap the race this week. This was for the aforementioned print story. Here are some of his thoughts: "This season lived up to the preseason hype," he said. "We had a really fantastic show with arguably the best top 5 in Idol history. I'm looking forward to what looks to be a very close finale. I'm going to predict it will be the closest since Clay and Ruben." He won't predict who will win between Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. "It's too close to call," he said. "What will make the difference is where Danny Gokey's votes go." He thinks Danny's voting base skews older than Kris'. That could help Adam. But the faith-based vote might go for Kris, he said. Guarini thinks Kris has a "very very strong toe hold on the younger voting bloc, the texting bloc. He also has that small town Midwestern appeal. And he is an amazing musician, a clean guitar player. He is someone who pulls out a lot of unexpected things like that Kanye West cover. Not many had heard that Fray arrangement. He's a dark horse. Hw will hit you with that velvet glove you didn't see coming." He also gives him a thumbs up for likeability and the fact girls want to vote for him even though he's married. His downside? "He is kind of shy and maybe a little too sweet. He's going to get overshadowed by Adam, who is all lights, camera, action! He's larger than life." 5/18: Justin Guarini handicaps the final two Adam's strengths are his entire package, Justin said. "He has control over his entire performance. And he can blow your socks off with that voice. But one of his pitfalls is he's set the bar so high for himself. He's really got to bring it and keep that energy at a consistent level. Even if he's doing a ballad, he's got to be absolutely flawless." Another pitfall: "relying too heavily on that rock scream." Guarini thinks the fourth judge Kara DioGuardi is a net positive. "She's a great blend of all the judges on the panel." and he likes how she stands up to Simon. And he thought the save was "pretty positive." TV Guide Channel will air a red carpet two-hour special before the "Idol" finale Wednesday. |

'Idol:' Justin
Guarini's take
Posted by Joanna Weiss May 13, 2009 02:33 PM
In the tense hours before tonight's results show, here's a little "Idol" snack: Last week, I spoke to first-season finalist Justin Guarini about "Idol" seasons past and present -- and about his new projects, including an upcoming third album and a series of 12-minute webisodes tentatively titled "The JG Show." He has also been doing "Idol"-related video blogs on Fancast. Here are some excerpts:
I think it certainly will not hurt Adam because the two of them really seem to get along. They seem to have a connection. Does Adam need the votes to win? I don't know. He is extremely polarizing. That's a good thing for him, I think. At what point, during season one of "Idol", did you realize you were involved in something big? I didn't quite get it until the top 10. That's when the press really started to get a hold of it. That's when we really became insulated by Fox and the "Idol" show. I realized, "Wow, we've got something serious on our hands." Now this season, the Idols are not only extremely talented but they are very aware of what's at stake. They know how to take advantage of all the opportunities when it comes to having an orchestra conducted by Rickey Minor and be able to get with a mind like Ricky and do the arrangements and really tailor the songs themselves. It's very difficult for anyone to call this a karaoke competition anymore. How much freedom did you have, that first season, to do your own arrangements and choose the songs you wanted? The producers didn't push at all on us. We had as much freedom as the artists we were trying to cover would give us. People l were reluctant to give their songs to us. We had a list of songs to choose from. A lot of artists didn't want to give their songs away for a show they'd never heard of. What are you working on now? I am currently working on getting a song that I wrote onto the "Twilight" ("New Moon") soundtrack. I put up the tune on YouTube, on my website - in less than a week, I got over a quarter million hits, a lot of
positive feedback, a lot of listeners on MySpace. We've gotten it into the music supervisor's hands for the movie.
